Development Officer Volunteer

Ya’axché is seeking a Development Officer Volunteer to join its team! Ya’axché, like most NGO’s, is financed mostly through grant funding. The Development Officer Volunteer, playing a critical role, works closely with the Development team and the rest of the Ya’axché staff to develop project concepts and financing ideas for programs according to the Ya’axché’s Fundraising Strategy.

Specific tasks will include
  • Implementing the organization’s Strategic Plan and Finance Strategy
  • Managing and maintaining donor profiles and funding history in Ya’axché’s Prospect List
  • Prospecting and profiling new and existing donors
  • Supporting the development and submission of proposals
  • Enabling staff to deliver on their goals by identifying and securing funding from external sources
  • Investigating novel financial models to support the organization’s sustainable finance goals
  • Maintaining donor relations through an up-to-date donor contact schedule
  • Establishing good working relationships across the organization and a strong understanding of the organization’s objectives, vision and mission
Duration of placement

One year commitment with the possibility of extending stay


BZ $1,200 (US $600) per month


There are no program fees charged for this experience, but the volunteer is expected to arrange and pay for:

  • Transportation to Punta Gorda, Belize, including airfare
  • Food, personal expenses, in-country travel, rent in Punta Gorda
  • Passport, visa, sufficient personal medical insurance
Required qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental or social sciences (or equivalent)
  • Excellent written and spoken English (essential)
  • Good working skills in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience in project development, grant writing and fundraising or interest in learning
  • Experience working with communities in developing countries or interest in experience
  • Willingness to work and learn from others from different cultures
