Sustainable Conservation Financing Manager Volunteer
The Sustainable Conservation Financing Manager is responsible for the implementation, management and development of Ya’axché’s sustainable financing initiative. Ya’axché Institute for Conservation Education’s (YICE) main objective is to generate funding for Ya’axché’s critical conservation and community development work. YICE consists of several branches, including EcoTourism Belize, which provides ecotours, group conservation education experiences, and rustic accommodations; Ya'axché's technical expertise are being made available to support projects elsewhere in Belize; a nursery that sells organic fruit and timber seedlings; and a membership program that includes friends and supporters of Ya’axché.

The Sustainable Conservation Financing Manager is part of the Development Team at Ya’axché. The Sustainable Conservation Financing Manager strives to maintain a professional image of the organization.

Specific tasks include:
  • Implementing YICE’s business plans and marketing strategies
  • Managing and developing YICE
  • Leading the development of marketing materials for YICE
  • Publishing and/or posting of high quality communication pieces to the public via the multiple mediums (social media, websites, newspapers, televisions, radio, etc.)
  • Supporting the design and production of high quality marketing and communication materials (i.e. reports, leaflets, posters)
  • Reconciling monthly financial records with the Finance Director
  • Conducting quarterly updates to the Leadership Team
  • Coordinating and marketing of YICE at special events such as Lobster Fest, Cacao Fest, Belize Expo, fundraising events and plan participation at international events
  • Ensuring that all external communication materials follow the guidelines for graphic standards as set out in the communication & marketing strategies.
  • Supervising of volunteers and Nursery Technician

Required qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Business Management, Marketing or related field
  • Experience working for conservation and/or development NGO’s
  • Proven Accounting and Business management
  • Communication, marketing and/or events management experience
  • Demonstrated experience managing a team
  • Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal and planning skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Basic photo editing skills
  • Ability to demonstrate disciplined implementation to execute plans.

Communications Officer Volunteer
The Communications Officer plays an exciting role of maintaining a positive image of Ya’axché. The Communications Officer will oversee the development and implementation of a communication plan that will enable Ya’axché to build on the success of its high profile for the protection of forests, rivers and biodiversity and work with local communities in southern Belize. The role requires a high level of responsibility and creativity. The Communications Officer strives to maintain a professional image of the organization through consistent and high quality communication pieces.

Furthermore, the Communications Officer can assist with the marketing of EcoTourism Belize, a sustainable financing venture of Ya'axché, as it becomes the leader of ecotours and accommodations provider in southern Belize. 100% of its profits supports the work of Ya’axché.

Specific tasks include:
  • Revising & implementing the organisation’s Communication Strategy
  • Managing the organization’s website, membership program and online campaigns
  • Leading the design and production of high quality marketing and communication materials (i.e. posters, leaflet, newsletter)
  • Creating consistent and high quality communication pieces (social media, websites, newspapers, televisions, radio, etc.)
  • Preparing and distributing the annual report, in liaison with all contributing authors
  • Acquiring high quality photos and videos for marketing materials
  • Supporting the marketing of EcoTourism Belize, special events (Ya'axché Farmers' Expo, Race Against Fire, Summer Camps, etc)

Development Manager Volunteer
Foremost, the Development Manager is expected to provide general support to Ya'axché by working flexibly, responsibly, with initiative and in a professional manner, playing an active role as part of Ya'axché’s team by actively contributing to the organization’s overall objectives, mission and values.

The Development Manager, supported by the Program Support Manager and Development Officers and guided by Ya’axché’s Finance Stratgey, is expected to lead the Development Team’s fundraising efforts. He/she is to ensure the work of researching funding opportunities, profiling news donors, and developing and maintaining donor and finance records is done with the Development Team. He/she is to collaborate with all of Ya’axché’s staff to develop project concepts and proposals for funding. The position also involves investigating and supporting the development of novel financing mechanisms at Ya’axché.

Specific tasks will include:
  • Leading the implementation the organisation’s Strategic Plan and Finance Strategy as related to this role
  • Managing and maintaining donor profiles and funding history in Ya’axché’s Prospect List
  • Prospecting and profiling new and existing donors
  • Leading and supporting the development and submission of proposals
  • Vetting all proposals, with the support of the Executive Director, to ensure all proposals are of the highest quality. Be responsible to review, input and finalize all proposals before submission
  • Enabling staff to deliver on their goals by identifying and securing funding from external sources
  • Investigating novel financial models to support the organisations sustainable finance goals
  • Maintaining donor relations through an up to date donor contact schedule
  • Establishing good working relationships across the organisation and a strong understanding of the organisations objectives, vision and mission
  • Developing and implementing a fundraising strategy for Ya'axché and annual work plan for development team
  • Monitoring and evaluating fundraising activities to ensure that the fundraising goals are being achieved

Development Officer Volunteer
The Development Officer Volunteer is expected to work alongside the development team to manage and strengthen fundraising for Ya’axché’s programs according to Ya’axché’s Fundraising Strategy. This is an unpaid position.

Specific tasks will include:
  • Prospecting for new donors, using online resources and updating the prospect list through the identification of upcoming proposal deadlines.
  • Project development and proposal writing, through consultation within Ya’axché; Fauna and Flora International; relevant stakeholders (including community groups when appropriate); donor agencies and private business (when appropriate).
  • Following activities outlined within the Operational Plan, in discussion with the Development Manager.
  • Investigating novel financing mechanisms, through consolation with Ya’axché staff and maintaining donor relations through the Donor Contact Schedule

Desired qualifications and skills
  • Associate or Bachelors level degree in any field
  • Excellent written and spoken English essential

GIS Officer Volunteer
The position of GIS Officer is one of the most important at Ya’axché. This team member is responsible for leading the geospatial activities through data collection, creation and analysis. The GIS Officer is an integral part of the implementation of Ya’axché projects and analysis of the impact that our work has in the Maya Golden Landscape (MGL). S/he must be dedicated and able to work independently without constant supervision by using his/her own initiative.

Specific tasks will include:
  • Lead geospatial activities through data collection, creation, and analysis
  • Download, manage and analyze LANDSAT imagery in order to monitor land use change and deforestation in the MGL
  • Support the ongoing projects at Ya´axché Conservation Trust through the collection and organization of spatial data.
  • Develop in-house trainings related with geospatial activities, as well as trainings for communities and other organizations.
  • Demonstrate initiative and creativity in generating activities and products that support the mission of the organization.
Duration of placement

Required qualifications and skills
  • Minimum Bachelor´s Degree in relevant subject area (Geography, GIS, Remote sensing, Biology, Natural Resource Management or related field)
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Experience in remote sensing, particularly analyzing LANDSAT imagery
  • Proven record in technical writing and data analysis
  • Experience using ArcGIS and remote sensing software, such as ENVI
  • Interest in conservation and community development
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
Desired qualifications and skills
  • Master´s or postgraduate degree in GIS and/or remote sensing
  • Experience using GPS to create spatial data sets
  • Physical ability to do field work in a tropical climate
  • Excellent knowledge of office programs like Excel and Access

Education & Outreach Officer
The Education & Outreach Officer is responsible to develop concrete plans and education materials in-line with the Education Strategy. Environmental education is critical for building knowledge of natural processes and teaching communities how to think, rather than what to think. The Education & Outreach Officer, considered one of the most important roles at Ya’axché, works as part of the Community Outreach & Livelihoods Program team. Specific tasks include:
  • Lead the implementation of the Education Strategy which contributes to the overall goals of Ya’axché.
  • Prepare and distribute promotional materials, lesson guides, manuals and curriculums according to the Education Strategy specific to school visits, special events such as Ya'axché Farmer's Expo, BioBlitz, and summer camp.
  • Plan and implement school visits and educational field trips in line with the Education Strategy.
  • Make necessary logistical arrangement for Ya’axché Summer Camp, BioBlitz, and attendance of other environmental events such as science fairs and Earth Day celebration. (E.g. Preparing and delivering invitations to schools, summer camp, arranging food and transportation, etc…).
  • Establish mechanisms for monitoring the implementation of educational activities (e.g. standardizing information on presentations carried out) and their effect upon the target groups (e.g. test results, compiling attendance sheets, record schedule, number of visits, acquire feedback from stakeholders).
  • Provide recommendations for Ya’axché’s education and outreach activities and programs.
  • Manage projects from time to time.
  • Work alongside Community Outreach & Livelihood Director in organizing a structured database for Scholarship recipients.
